The Studenica stone is one of the most famous Serbian natural stones. It occurs in an area stretching from the southern slopes of Mount Golija, via Studenica to Čemerno near Kraljevo. The best quality stone of this type is mined in quarries near the Studenica Monastery near Kraljevo. The monastery itself is built of this stone, hence its name. Studenica stone has metamorphic origin, its chemical composition is calcium carbonate (there are some rare species of this stone that also have silicate mixtures), it appears in very specific and characteristic colors (white, blue, caramel and black), it has good physical and mechanical properties (great strength, durability, as well as resistance to weather conditions (snow, rain, ice, etc.), chemical agents and pollution in large cities. In addition to all these properties, the Studenica stone has exceptional aesthetic properties and beautiful appearance, therefore it is often used as an ornamental stone.
