The Studenica rock is one of the most famous Serbian natural stones. It occurs in an area stretching from the southern slopes of Mount Golija, via Studenica to Čemerno near Kraljevo. However, the best quality stone is mined in the quarries near the Studenica Monastery. The monastery itself is built of this stone, hence the name. The Studenica rock has a metamorphic origin, which means that it was formed under great pressure and/or high temperature. The chemical composition of this type of stone is calcium carbonate. We see this rock appear in very specific and characteristic colors including white, blue, caramel and black. Because the stone has a metamorphic origin, it has good physical and mechanical properties such as high strength, durability, resistance to severe weather conditions (snow, rain and ice), chemical agents and pollution in large cities. In addition to all these properties, the Studenica rock has exceptional aesthetic properties and a beautiful appearance. This is mainly the reason why it is often used as an ornamental stone.
